I have always loved painting and drawing and trying to figure out how things work. When I was a child one of my first paintings was done on my bedroom floor with my mother’s makeup. I wanted to create something beautiful. My parents and grandparent were quick to keep me in supply of crayons, markers and coloring books in hopes that I would discontinue my “graffiti” art. While this was not always the case I continued to grow as a creator and explorer. As a life long learner, I reflectively seek out avenues for discovering the world around me and have found that vehicle in art. As an art educator I have the opportunity to share with my students to a broad range of topics, themes and ideas while nurturing their ability to be creative and independent thinkers.
In addition to teaching students skills and techniques in various art media I also aspire to promote students developmental growth in critical thinking and communication, to become life long learners and partners in a global world. Through exposure to a variety of visual art media and art forms from various cultures and areas students learn to look beyond the surface of their environment and develop thoughts and ideas about their interests and experiences. Students communicate these viewpoints both verbally during class discussions and critiques as well as visually through art making.
In a holistic approach to education I employ a variety of methods to reach diverse audiences and learning styles. Through demonstration, hands on activities, and supported feedback and assessment students become familiar with tools and materials creating greater understanding in the application of art making. Students are then encouraged utilize their individuality and critical thinking skills to effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas through their artwork.
I analyze the effectiveness of my teaching strategies and goals for each unit through the observation of student work and verbal and written reflection by students regarding their own work. As I monitor and adjust each unit of instruction I look for ways to make meaningful connections for all students and help them to attain their personal goals as well as the established clear objectives for each project. When necessary, I ask the assistance of outside sources to ensure that instruction is relevant and appropriate to the needs of the student.
